Squad Composition

High-level squad depth and position coverage. Use this section to see where each squad has depth and where it relies on a smaller player group.

Squad by Position

Count mode

Number of players in each position, indicating squad depth. Darker segments indicate players with more appearances.

Count mode allows you to switch between views:

  • Selected position - view players in the selected position, so see how many different players have played that position
  • Primary position - view what position each player primarily plays

Squad Overlap

Shows the balance of players who have only appeared for one squad versus players who have featured in both squads within each season.

A smaller middle section (e.g. 2019/20) suggests two fairly distinct groups of 1st team and 2nd team players.

A larger middle section (e.g. 2024/25) suggests more of a "one squad" approach with fewer players exclusively in the 1st XV. and 2nd team players.

Squad Size & Continuity

How many players represent the club from season to season, and how many players return from the previous game, week to week.

Squad Size Trend

View

Season-by-season view of players used in each squad, broken down by forwards and backs.

Large playing squads are clearly a good thing, but too many players can indicate a lack of consistency.

Average Returners

Average number of players returning to the starting XV after being selected to start in the previous game.

Higher values indicate a more settled squad, in terms of availability and consistency of selection.

If 10 players return from the previous game (roughly average for the 1st XV), that means there are 5 changes to the starting XV.

1st XV League Comparison

Compare the 1st XV squad size and average number of returners with their league opposition.

League Squad Size

Left: See how many players the 1st XV used in a given season compared with the other teams in their league.

Right: View the season-on-season trend in player numbers for the 1st XV, compared with the league average (dotted line) and the rest of the league (range from minimum to maximum).

League Returners

Left: See how many players return, on average, from one league game to the next for 1st XV and other teams in their league.

Right: View the season-on-season trend in returners for the 1st XV, compared with the league average (dotted line) and the rest of the league (range from minimum to maximum).
